The 2023 Thriving Youth Task Force survey found 17% of teens reported being bullied at school. Of students who identify as LGBTQ+, 34% reported being bullied at school.
That same survey found 9% of teens in the general school population had considered suicide in the previous year. For students who identify as LGBTQ+, 35% had considered suicide.
Protecting certain groups of at-risk students doesn’t make your child less special, less brilliant, less of a prodigy at whatever their thing is. It’s merely recognizing that some kids are more vulnerable than others and doing something about it.
If the Federal government told us to stop protecting Jewish kids, would we? What about kids with addiction issues? Or those living in poverty? Which at-risk group are you willing to cast aside?
The Trevor Project found that the suicide attempt rate by LGBTQ youth in communities viewed as very unaccepting of them was 21%. In very accepting communities, that number drops to 8%.
